ASIATODAY.ID, KUALA LUMPUR — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially attended the 46th ASEAN Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Malaysia, on Monday, May 26, 2025. The summit was formally opened by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently chairs ASEAN for the year 2025.
During the plenary session of the ASEAN Summit 2025, regional leaders deliberated on strategic issues including the advancement of the ASEAN Community, the region’s long-term roadmap, and the strengthening of external partnerships with global stakeholders.
A key focus of the summit was the implementation of the ASEAN 2045 Vision, charting the course for a safer, more prosperous, and sustainable region.
“With great honor, I hereby declare the 46th ASEAN Summit officially open,” said PM Anwar in his opening remarks.
Accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, President Prabowo underscored ASEAN’s role as a pillar of regional stability and prosperity for over five decades.
“ASEAN stands at a crossroads. It must adopt a forward-looking, results-oriented approach rooted in unity to confront global challenges,” President Prabowo stated during the plenary session.
He also emphasized the importance of deepening ASEAN’s external relations with key partners such as China and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), aiming to enhance ASEAN’s geopolitical relevance and promote a more inclusive and sustainable geo-economic model.
ASEAN 2045: A Vision for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim remarked that the year 2025 marks a decade since the formation of the ASEAN Community. He called for collective commitment and determination to realize the ASEAN 2045 Vision, which aims to strengthen unity and regional resilience.
“Initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid will be pivotal in boosting energy security and driving economic growth in the region, with a projected GDP value addition of up to USD 3 trillion by 2050,” PM Anwar stated.
The summit also witnessed the adoption of key policy documents by ASEAN leaders, including: The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the 10th Anniversary of the ASEAN Community, The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045, The ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and The Strategic Plan for the ASEAN Economic Community.
President Prabowo’s attendance at the high-level summit marked a significant moment in Indonesia’s foreign policy, reaffirming the country’s proactive diplomacy and strategic role in shaping a more resilient, peaceful, and inclusive Southeast Asia.
With the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability” spearheaded by Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship, the 46th ASEAN Summit served as a vital platform to enhance regional cooperation and ensure shared progress for all member states. (AT Network)
