ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A total of 16 countries have confirmed that they will qualify for the last 16 of the 2023 ASIAN CUP.
The Indonesian national team succeeded in making new history after being confirmed as having qualified for the round of 16.
The Qatar national team won Group A of the 2023 ASIAN CUP with 9 points from three matches. Tajikistan qualified for the round of 16 as runner up in Group A.
Group B passed three representatives to the round of 16. The Australian national team won Group B with a score of 7. Runner up was Uzbekistan, meanwhile Syria ensured qualification for the round of 16 of the 2023 ASIAN CUP with the status of the best three.
Group C also qualified three representatives to the round of 16 of the ASIAN CUP 2023. Iran topped the Group C standings with 9 points, meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was runner up. The Palestinian national team, which received a score of 4, also qualified for the round of 16 with the status of the best third place.
From Group D, the Iraqi national team was able to overcome Japan by becoming the top of the standings. Jesus Casas’ men qualified for the last 16 of the 2023 ASIAN CUP with a score of 9. The Japanese national team had to be willing to be runners up in Group D after losing to Iraq in the second match with a score of 2-1. Meanwhile, the Indonesian national team qualified for the round of 16 after Kyrgyzstan vs Oman managed to draw 1-1.
General Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir said this achievement was a new history of Indonesian football.
“Thank God, new history for Indonesian football. One place in the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup can be secured by the Indonesian national team,” wrote Erick via X’s social media account, on Friday, January 26 2024.
According to Erick, this achievement was an extraordinary struggle by players, coaches and officials to be able to bring the Indonesian national team to the round of 16.
He also did not forget to appreciate the prayers of all Indonesian people who never stopped for the national team.
“The struggle is not over yet, we will give our best to bring #Garuda Global!”
