ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian national team’s struggle in the 2023 ASIAN CUP had to stop in the round of 16 after being defeated by Australia with a score of 4-0 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Venue Stadium, Sunday, January 28 2024.
The Australian national team succeeded in reducing the aggressive play of the Indonesian national team by breaking into the Indonesian goal twice in the first half through Jackson Irvine, Martin Boyle. Australia added two goals again in the second half through Craig Goodwin and Harry Souttar.
Indonesia played aggressively at the start of the first half. Even Shin Tae-yong’s men immediately had the opportunity to score against Australia in this match in the fifth minute. Starting from good cooperation, striker Rafael Struick’s shot using Justin Hubner’s bait still narrowly deviated from the Australian goal which was guarded by Matthew Ryan.
Even though according to the FIFA rankings, Indonesia is far behind Australia, the Garuda national team was able to control the ball in this match. Indonesia had to concede in the 11th minute. Jackson Irvine’s stabbing shot touched Elkan Baggott’s leg so the ball changed direction into the goal, but the Indonesian goalkeeper, Ernando Ari, could not block it.
This was Irvine’s third goal during the 2023 ASIAN CUP tournament. Until the 20th minute of the first half, Australia was leading 1-0 over Indonesia.
The Indonesian team recorded another chance in the 22nd minute, but Justin Hubner’s shot from inside the penalty box was caught by Ryan. Indonesia scored two more opportunities in the 38th and 40th minutes but Yakob Sayuri and Marselino Ferdinan’s kicks still bounced off the Australian National Team’s goal.
Australia, who played by relying on counter attacks in this match, added a goal at the end of the first half through Martin Boyle’s flying header. Until the first half ended, Australia was leading 2-0 over Indonesia.
Entering the second half, the tempo of the Indonesia vs Australia game slowed down a bit. The Indonesian team still couldn’t penetrate Australia’s tight defense even though The Socceroos played nothing too special. Until round 75 of the second half, there were no additional goals from either team.
Coach Shin Tae-yong then replaced Asnawi Mangkualam and Yakob Sayuri with Witan Sulaeman and Rizky Ridho. The Australian team almost added a goal in the 80th minute. Mitchell Duke, who had escaped Elkan Baggott’s guard, chipped the ball but it still narrowly deviated from the Indonesian goal.
Australia was finally able to add a goal in the 89th minute through Craig Goodwin’s kick. Two minutes later it was Harry Souttar’s turn to break through Ernando Ari’s goal in the 91st minute using a free kick.
The Australian team will await the winner between Saudi Arabia or South Korea in the quarter-finals.
