ASIATODAY.ID, TEHRAN – Iran’s Head of the Department of Environment (DOE), Shina Ansari, has proposed the creation of a joint Green Innovation Fund by BRICS nations to support climate adaptation projects in developing countries. She also called for a global fund to tackle plastic pollution.
Speaking at the BRICS Environment Working Group (EWG) Meeting, held on April 1–2 in Brazil, Ansari emphasized that the platform presents a unique opportunity for BRICS members to make fair, practical, and comprehensive decisions in response to pressing global environmental challenges.
Highlighting the United Nations’ environmental agenda, which focuses on climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, Ansari stressed the urgent need for financial resources, technology transfer, and capacity building. She underscored the importance of strengthening international cooperation to achieve sustainable economic and social development while preserving the environment.
However, she warned that unilateral and unfair restrictions on international trade, under the guise of environmental protection, have created significant challenges for many countries.
“The shift toward a green transition is a critical step in combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions,” Ansari said, as reported by the Tehran Times on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
She noted that the green transition requires a comprehensive approach, including the use of low-carbon energy sources, enhanced energy efficiency, and the development of sustainable urban planning and transportation systems.
According to Ansari, embracing this transition would not only reduce climate-related risks but also create new economic opportunities and improve the quality of life globally.
“BRICS is expected to play a pivotal role by offering technical, financial, and advisory support. This includes knowledge sharing, joint project implementation, professional expertise exchange, and strengthened environmental cooperation,” Ansari explained.
To further support these efforts, Ansari proposed the establishment of a Clean Technology Transfer Center, which would ensure equitable access to cutting-edge carbon reduction technologies.
Ansari also recommended the creation of a Joint Environmental Monitoring Platform leveraging remote sensing and artificial intelligence to manage cross-border environmental crises. Additionally, she called for the development of a new international legal framework and the prohibition of sanctions on environmental projects.
Ansari highlighted Iran’s substantial progress in climate adaptation and mitigation, citing the expansion of renewable energy, protection of biodiversity, increased protected areas, and efforts to combat dust and sand storms.
“Nonetheless, Iran remains one of the most climate-vulnerable countries, suffering from prolonged droughts, sand and dust storms, biodiversity degradation, severe river flow reduction, and over-extraction of groundwater resources,” Ansari added.
Ansari concluded by expressing Iran’s readiness to enhance environmental cooperation with BRICS, offering to host a BRICS expert meeting to formulate a joint action plan, share expertise on critical issues such as water scarcity, and explore sustainable financial solutions. (AT Network)
