ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The Government of Indonesia is strengthening international collaboration to accelerate the downstream development of its chemical industry through coal utilization.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has expressed strong support for the interest shown by Chinese energy company Beiken Energy Group Co., Ltd. in investing in Indonesia’s Coal-to-Chemical sector.

This strategic move is part of the Ministry of Industry’s efforts to enhance the domestic chemical supply chain by transforming coal into high value-added petrochemical products.

“Indonesia has enormous potential for developing the Coal-to-Chemical industry, particularly to produce derivatives such as methanol, olefin, propylene, polyolefin, BDO, and other advanced chemical products. Collaboration with Beiken Energy is expected to accelerate chemical industrialization, strengthen the national supply chain, and increase import substitution for chemical feedstocks,” said Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita after a meeting with Beiken Energy in Shanghai, China, quoted on Monday, October 13, 2025.

Beiken Energy Brings Advanced Coal Gasification Technology

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Beijing, Beiken Energy Group Co., Ltd. specializes in integrated engineering, oil and gas exploration and production, and energy conversion technologies — including coal gasification technology.

Beiken’s advanced gasification solutions could help transform Indonesia’s coal industry from carbon-based production to a high-value chemical-based economy, producing key derivatives such as polyolefin and 1,4-Butanediol (BDO).

Moreover, Beiken’s proprietary technology is capable of processing low-calorific coal and operating under high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) conditions, making it well-suited for Indonesia’s strategic industrial landscape.

This technological edge could play a crucial role in supporting downstream chemical industry development and expanding opportunities for gasification-based industrial collaboration.

Exploring Investment Opportunities in Coal-to-Chemical Projects

Although Beiken Energy currently has no investments in Indonesia, the company has expressed strong interest in exploring opportunities to develop Coal-to-Chemical projects, particularly focused on low-rank coal gasification.

“Beiken’s technology can optimize the conversion of low-calorific coal into high-value chemical products. This aligns perfectly with Indonesia’s downstreaming agenda, which aims to strengthen the structure of the basic chemical industry and reduce dependence on imported raw materials,” Minister Agus explained.

The development of the Coal-to-Chemical industry is a key pillar in Indonesia’s industrialization strategy, emphasizing value creation, efficiency, and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

Collaboration with technology-driven partners like Beiken Energy is expected to expand Indonesia’s production capacity for methanol, olefin, propylene, polyolefin, and other essential petrochemical intermediates.

The meeting between Minister Agus and Beiken Energy in Shanghai also marks a strategic milestone in strengthening international industrial cooperation and advancing technological innovation within Indonesia’s manufacturing sector.

“With the support of strategic partners such as Beiken Energy, we are optimistic that the Coal-to-Chemical initiative will accelerate the creation of a resilient, efficient, and globally competitive chemical ecosystem in Indonesia,” Minister Agus Gumiwang emphasized.

Through this partnership, the Ministry of Industry reaffirms its commitment to bridging collaboration between domestic industries and global partners, fostering technology transfer, investment expansion, and the long-term sustainability of Indonesia’s chemical downstream industry. (AT Network)
