Donor Countries Meet in Bali, What’s Up?

The Development Leader Conference (DLC) in Jimbaran, Bali. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, BALI – The Indonesian government together with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and the Center for Global Development (CGD) are again holding the Development Leader Conference (DLC) in Jimbaran, Bali on 12-13 June 2024. This time the DLC is a continuation of the implementation 2023 DLC in Oslo, Norway,

Attended by developed countries as members of the Development Assistance Countries (DAC), developing countries with new emerging donors, as well as representatives of international organizations, think tanks and philanthropic institutions, the DLC is a limited forum that discusses discourses related to global development cooperation as well as a place to exchange points of view. policies and best practices in establishing multi-party collaboration.

By holding this forum which was attended by more than 80 delegates from various international institutional backgrounds, Indonesia had the opportunity to encourage strengthening its position and posture as part of developing countries (Global South) while strengthening its role as a reliable southern provider in the context of triangular cooperation.

Apart from being an opportunity for Indonesia to raise its profile as a new donor country, this DLC momentum is also used to encourage other developing countries to also take steps to become new emerging donors.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Pahala Nugraha Mansury emphasized the importance of close cooperation between traditional donor countries and new donor countries, one of which is in dealing with the gap in achieving SDGs targets between developed and developing countries.

“Development cooperation must be able to support the most vulnerable groups, considering that currently international development cooperation assistance is dominated by concessional loans,” he said, quoted Friday, June 14 2024.

Furthermore, he also assessed that the existing cooperation must be able to encourage economic transformation such as downstreaming and energy transition, including through financial support and technology transfer. Development cooperation must be a catalyst for partnership between the parties.

“The global development cooperation scheme cannot be separated from the important role of developing countries,” he explained.

With the theme “Towards shared prosperity: collaborative solutions for global development”, this DLC produced a common view regarding the importance of reforming Official Development Assistance (ODA) and how ODA can support, among other things, climate change mitigation and adaptation. The 7th session of the DLC this time This also discusses ideal partnership patterns in development cooperation, as well as how to build narratives and communication strategies related to development cooperation that can be accepted by the public.

Approaching the Platinum Jubilee commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Asian-African Conference, the Director General of Information and Public Diplomacy, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Siti Nugraha Mauludiah, at the end of the final DLC session raised the significance of the Bandung Spirit as a form of solidarity among nations in working together to face various global challenges. .

“Bandung Spirit is still very relevant in building solidarity and cooperation between countries that have just achieved economic independence, to further help other Southern countries achieve their own economic independence,” he concluded.

Indonesia’s success in hosting the DLC this time again shows its central role as a driver of development cooperation among developing countries. Through the spirit of the Bandung Spirit and in order to uphold respect for the ideals of the Indonesian people to participate in world peace, Indonesia through DLC strengthens solidarity and cooperation to face global challenges together.
