ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – France firmly supports the International Criminal Court (ICC) after the ICC prosecutor submitted an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister.
“Regarding Israel, the Pre-Trial Council will decide whether to issue this warrant, after examining the evidence presented by the Prosecutor to support its accusations,” said the French Foreign Ministry, Tuesday, May 21, 2024.
“France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations.”
This decision by France marked a major break with its Western allies, including Britain, Italy and the United States.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, May 20 said that the order for the arrest of him and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) would not stop Israel from continuing the war in Gaza.
In a video statement, Netanyahu said the ICC’s arrest order was against all of Israel and reiterated that the ICC’s move was anti-Semitic.
In a harsh tone, Netanyahu attacked ICC Prosecutor General Karim Khan, claiming that efforts to issue arrest warrants against him and Gallant along with three leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas were “a gross distortion of reality.”
Several Israeli officials including Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned Khan’s announcement made the previous day, with all of them accusing the ICC of being anti-semitic. (AT Network)
