ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Gorontalo Province succeeded in exporting 50 thousand tons of corn worth IDR 209 billion to the Philippines.
Corn exports to the Philippines are proof of the revival of national corn production. Apart from exports, Gorontalo has also sent up to 264 thousand tons of corn to other regions in Indonesia that are experiencing a deficit.
“5 months ago we imported 250 thousand tons of corn, but today we exported 50 thousand tons to the Philippines,” said Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, quoted Thursday, May 30 2024.
Amran targets Gorontalo to become a pilot area in Indonesia in rapidly increasing production and welfare of corn farmers. Because of this, corn production in Gorontalo in the future will be increased to above 2 million tons from current production of around 1.5 million tons.
“We are providing seed assistance for the needs of 100 thousand hectares of land in Gorontalo. Next year Gorontalo will reach the target of over 2 million tonnes,” said Amran.
The corn planting area in Gorontalo was recorded at 356 thousand hectares and production was 1.5 million tons.
Gorontalo Governor Rudy Salahuddin said corn production in Gorontalo had currently increased 52.8% compared to last year’s 1 million tons.
He said that 10 thousand tons of corn had also been sent from Gorontalo to meet needs in Jakarta. According to him, 50 thousand tons of corn exported to the Philippines came from several companies in Gorontalo.
“With these conditions, Gorontalo Province is ready to contribute to meeting national needs,” he said. (ATN)
