Papua New Guinea (PNG) Country. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Horizontal conflict broke out in Papua New Guinea (PNG). At least 53 people were reported killed in inter-tribal fighting in the northern highlands of Papua New Guinea on Sunday, February 18, 2024.

ABC News Australia first reported this incident, explaining that the incident occurred in Enga Province. Dozens of people who died were said to have suffered a sudden attack by another tribe.

Meanwhile, local newspaper the Post-Courier said that the violence occurred on Sunday and was linked to fighting between two tribes.

“By far, this is the biggest (killing) I have ever seen in Enga, probably in the whole of the Highlands, in Papua New Guinea,” said senior Papua New Guinea police officer George Kakas.

Papua New Guinea is home to hundreds of tribes, many of whom still live in inhospitable and remote areas. The latest violence involves the same tribes responsible for clashes that killed 60 people in Enga province last year.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident of tribal war was very shocking and stated that he was ready to provide support for Papua New Guinea.

“We provide quite a lot of support, especially to train police and security officers in Papua New Guinea,” said Albanese. (ATN)
