Human Trafficking: Dozens of Indonesian Citizens Held in Conflict Areas in Myanmar

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Dozens of Indonesian citizens who are victims of human trafficking are being held in a remote area in Myawaddy, Myanmar.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received a report regarding the case and it has now been handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar.

Currently, the Indonesian government is still coordinating with the Myanmar authorities to handle this case. The reason is, the location of the victims is in an armed conflict area.

“It is strongly suspected that the Indonesian citizens are in Hpa Lu, a remote area in Myawaddy, Myanmar,” said the official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sunday, September 8 2024.

“The area is a location of armed conflict and is currently controlled by the rebels,” he said.

The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon has also followed up by coordinating and communicating with the Myanmar authorities.

“The embassy has also carried out informal communications to networks in Myawaddy,” explained the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For your information, from 2020 to March 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has handled 3,703 Indonesian citizens who were involved in online fraud or ‘online scam’.

Meanwhile, throughout 2024, there have been 107 complaints from Myanmar, of which 44 Indonesian citizens have been successfully returned to Indonesia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Indonesian citizens to be careful about job offers abroad, especially job offers that do not include an official work visa and do not sign a contract before leaving. (AT Network)
