ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Orca 04 monitoring vessel belonging to the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, captured 1 Philippine-flagged fishing vessel. The ship was caught while carrying out illegal fishing in the Sulawesi Sea.

The ship that was seized was a light boat (purse seine) with the initials FB. LB. JM A-2.

“When the inspection was carried out, the Filipino-flagged ship did not have a single permit document to carry out fishing activities from the Indonesian government. “Furthermore, the ship will be escorted and diadhoked to Pangkalan Bitung on February 27 2024,” said Acting Director General of Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision, Dr. Pung Nugroho Saksono, A.Pi, M.M, in his statement in Jakarta, Wednesday, February 28 2024.

Ipunk said that the ship from the Philippines was a ship in a fishing vessel operation unit with purse seine fishing gear that carried out fish theft in Indonesian waters. The ship is manned by a Filipino captain, NB, and 2 crew members who are also Filipino.

“They (Philippine ships) prefer to use FADs as attractors for fish which have positive phototactic properties. In this way, illegal Filipino vessels can catch fish in large quantities,” said Ipunk.

FB, LB. JM A-2 is suspected of committing fisheries violations in the form of carrying out fishing activities in the Indonesian State Fisheries Management Area without valid permission from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and violating Article 92 in conjunction with Article 26 paragraph (1) of Law Number 31 of 2004 concerning Fisheries as amended by Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning Government Decree in Lieu of Law Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation Becomes Law.

This arrest adds to the record of arrests of illegal fishing vessels carried out by the Orca 04 Monitoring Vessel.

It was recorded that from 2016 to 2023, the monitoring vessel Orca 04 succeeded in capturing 11 foreign fishing vessels and 13 Indonesian fishing vessels. (ATN)
