ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government has succeeded in achieving a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector of 127.67 million tonnes of CO2e (CO2 equivalent) in 2023. This realization exceeds the target of 109.64% of the 116 million tonnes set. CO2e.
Acting Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Jisman P. Hutajulu said, Indonesia continues to take concrete steps in climate mitigation, including reducing carbon emissions by increasing the target to 31.89% (previously 29%) with its own capabilities. , and 43.20% (previously 41%) with international support.
“The government targets to reduce carbon emissions in the energy sector by 31.89% with its own efforts and 43.20% with international support by 2030,” said Jisman at a press conference on the performance achievements of the EBTKE subsector in 2023 in Jakarta, Thursday, January 18 2024.
Jisman explained that the realization of reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector in 2023 is supported by several factors, including: Implementation of EBT (51.30 million tons of CO2e), Application of energy efficiency (31.76 million tons of CO2e), Application of low-carbon fuel (natural gas ) (15.55 million tons CO2e), Use of clean generation technology (13.33 million tons CO2e), and other activities (15.63 million tons CO2e).
Apart from that, energy efficiency also contributes to reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector.
In 2023, the achievement of primary energy intensity is 132.6 Oil Barrel Equivalent (SBM)/Billion Rupiah or 102% exceeding the target of 135.2 BOE/Billion Rupiah. This indicator of decreasing primary energy intensity shows that the energy sector is becoming more efficient in using energy from the energy provider side.
Based on an International Energy Agency (IEA) study, Indonesia’s energy intensity in 2021 is better than most G20 countries. And the increase in Indonesia’s energy intensity in the 10 year period (2011-2020) was 3%.
According to Jisman, the achievement of reducing the primary energy intensity of the Energy and Mineral Resources sector in 2023 is good news for national energy security. The government will continue to strive to improve these achievements and realize the target of reducing primary energy intensity.
“The government will continue to strive to improve these achievements and realize the target of reducing primary energy intensity,” concluded Jisman. (AT Network)
