ASIATODAY.ID, KARAWANG — President Prabowo Subianto has officially declared Indonesia’s national food self-sufficiency for 2025, marking a historic shift in the country’s strategic posture and bringing rice imports to a complete halt.
The declaration was delivered during the National Harvest Ceremony in Kertamukti Village, Karawang Regency, West Java, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
“In the name of God, on this Wednesday morning, January 7, 2026, I, Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, hereby declare that Indonesia has achieved national food self-sufficiency in 2025,” the President announced.
Food as the Foundation of National Independence
In a forceful address, President Prabowo framed food security not merely as an economic achievement, but as a core pillar of national independence and sovereignty. A nation, he stressed, cannot be truly independent if it relies on others to feed its people.
“No nation is truly free if it cannot provide food for its own people. A country cannot claim independence if its food supply depends on other nations,” he said.
The President recalled the COVID-19 pandemic, when major rice-producing countries restricted exports to protect domestic supply—an episode he described as a strategic warning against overreliance on global markets for essential commodities.
Four-Year Target Achieved in Just One
President Prabowo revealed that upon taking office, his administration set a four-year timeline to achieve rice and food self-sufficiency. Through rapid consolidation, policy alignment, and strong support for farmers, that goal was achieved in just one year.
“In one year, we are standing on our own feet,” he declared.
He described the achievement as a new milestone in Indonesia’s independence, extending beyond agriculture into national resilience and strategic autonomy.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Indonesia’s food self-sufficiency in 2025 is underpinned by strong national indicators:
– National rice production reached 34.71 million tons, up 13.36% year-on-year
– Rice surplus totaled 3.52 million tons
– Rice imports for consumption were completely halted throughout 2025
– State rice reserves (Bulog) peaked at 4.2 million tons, the highest level in national history
– Farmers’ Terms of Trade (NTP) climbed to 125.35, the highest in 25 years
Indonesia’s agricultural sector also posted robust export performance. Between January and October 2025, agricultural exports reached IDR 629.7 trillion, up 33.6% compared to the same period in the previous year—signaling rising global competitiveness.
Farmers at the Front Line of Sovereignty
President Prabowo paid tribute to farmers, agricultural extension workers, and rural communities, describing them as the front line of Indonesia’s food sovereignty.
“Today you have delivered tangible proof. You have marked a historic milestone in Indonesia’s independence,” he said.
Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman described food self-sufficiency as the flagship achievement of the Red and White Cabinet, crediting the President’s leadership and consistent policy support for the sector.
“More than 160 million Indonesian farmers extend their gratitude. This is the result of strong leadership and unwavering commitment to agriculture,” the minister said.
Not the End, but the Foundation
The government emphasized that food self-sufficiency in 2025 is not an endpoint, but the foundation for long-term national resilience. Future priorities include maintaining production stability, expanding self-sufficiency to other strategic commodities, and ensuring that economic gains are equitably shared across farming and fishing communities.
