Indonesia and EU Hold 8th Security Policy Dialogue, What Are the Results?

ASIATODAY.ID, SEMARANG – ​Indonesia and the European Union (EU) have held the 8th Security Policy Dialogue in Semarang, Wednesday, September 18 2024.

The Indonesian delegation was led by the Director of American and European Intraregional and Interregional Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nidya Kartikasari, while the EU delegation was led by Dr. Alison Weston, Acting Director for Security and Defense Policy and Senior Coordinator for Maritime Security at the European Commission’s European External Action Service.

After the dialogue, the EU Delegation discussed with experts from the Jakarta Center for Law Enforcement (JCLEC). ​The meeting discussed various security issues and cooperation at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels with the vision of strengthening the partnership between Indonesia and the EU. The meeting also discussed various trends in security issues, security cooperation and defense initiatives amidst developments in the geopolitical and geoeconomic situation in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. ​

The meeting reviewed cooperation in the security sector following the last Security Policy Dialogue. The discussion covers the areas of counter-terrorism, de-radicalization, peacekeeping, the EU’s common Security and Defense Policy, maritime security including Maritime Domain Awareness, transnational organized crime (countering narcotics abuse, cyber crime, cyber security, human trafficking crimes), as well as disaster management. ​

Regarding cooperation in various regional and multilateral forums, this meeting has discussed various strategic issues related to disarmament, non-proliferation and security issues in the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear fields. The meeting underscored the importance of promoting dialogue on these issues in various multilateral forums. ​

The meeting underlined that the Security Policy Dialogue is an important and strategic forum to be held regularly. Apart from being one of the pillars for strengthening the partnership between Indonesia and the EU, this dialogue contributes to peace, stability and an international order based on rules and law.
