ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The governments of Indonesia and the United States have agreed to collaborate in the field of sustainable energy and mineral development.
This was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of sustainable energy and mineral cooperation in a circular (desk to desk) manner, between the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and the United States Ambassador to Indonesia.
“This signing reflects the strong commitment of both countries in strengthening collaboration in increasing sustainable energy and mineral cooperation and complements existing energy cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the United States Ministry of Energy and the United States Ministry of Trade,” said the Minister of Energy. and Indonesian Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif in Jakarta, Friday (10/11/2023).
This collaboration with the US Department of States will cover the Energy Resources Governance Initiatives (ERGI) and Clean Energy Demand Initiative (CEDI) programs, which are United States initiatives to help Indonesia with sustainable mineral management on various topics, namely mining and geology, supply security and resilience of the electricity grid, renewable energy, clean energy and the energy transition including its technology, biofuels and related products, as well as other areas to be jointly determined.
“The United States has supported the development of renewable energy in Indonesia through various cooperation platforms. So far there has been cooperation with the Net Zero World program through the United States Ministry of Energy and the Clean Energy Working Group through the United States Ministry of Trade. This collaboration is with the United States Ministry of Foreign Affairs “will strengthen existing cooperation, especially in terms of strengthening the development of the mineral industry to support the energy transition,” explained Arifin.
United States Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Kim stated that the signing of this memorandum of understanding would strengthen clean energy cooperation and sustainable mineral resource development between the United States and Indonesia.
“I am proud to sign this memorandum of understanding together with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, which I believe will strengthen our partnership in promoting clean energy and sustainable development of mineral resources. Together, we will continue our robust efforts to support a sustainable energy future cleaner and achieve shared goals regarding climate,” said Sung Kim.
The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding shows the strengthening of Indonesia’s energy cooperation with the United States. Apart from that, this Memorandum of Understanding will also be one of the deliverables announced in the United States during the visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Washington DC and San Francisco in the context of a bilateral meeting with President Biden and the APEC Leader’s Meeting on 12-17 November 2023.
For your information, ERGI is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State to promote mining issues and the supply chain of United States mineral resources. The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources welcomes the ERGI initiative with the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal as the implementer of the collaboration.
Meanwhile, CEDI is a United States government initiative which aims to be a bridge between United States companies to be able to invest in countries that need clean and renewable energy project investors. Approximately 325 United States companies have joined this initiative.
Minister Arifin has also announced Indonesia’s support for CEDI and Net Zero World Initiatives on the occasion of COP-26 Glasgow on November 4 2021. (AT Network)
