ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government has officially collaborated with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) to strengthen Indonesia’s international economic cooperation.
This collaboration was marked by the signing of an MoU by Assistant Deputy for Multilateral Economic Cooperation at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Ferry Ardiyanto and ERIA Chief Operating Officer Toru Furuichi, Tuesday, July 30 2024.
“Today we witnessed the signing of an MoU with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). This is a think tank that is included in the top 10 think tanks published by the Civil Society Report and think tanks from the University of Pennsylvania. “And this is one of the well-known think tanks with offices in Jakarta,” said the Coordinating Minister for the Indonesian Economy, Airlangga Hartarto.
The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) is an international organization founded in Jakarta in 2008 to carry out research activities and prepare policy recommendations for further economic integration in Southeast Asia and East Asia.
ERIA also serves as a knowledge partner for policy development for countries in the ASEAN region and has previously provided support to the Coordinating Ministry for the Indonesian Economy in the form of studies, analysis and other technical support.
The Coordinating Ministry for the Indonesian Economy will collaborate with ERIA in the form of studies, publications, joint projects and capacity building activities in the field of international economic cooperation. Areas within the scope of cooperation between the two institutions include Indonesia’s accession to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), involvement in the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), development and/ or expanding Indonesian exports, assessing the economic potential of the next generation vehicle industry, developing an efficient and effective road fleet renewal strategy, and other areas agreed upon by the parties.
“I appreciate the cooperation and support that ERIA has provided to the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy so far. I hope that cooperation between the two parties can become closer, especially regarding Indonesia’s accession efforts to the OECD. “I am confident that with the resources that ERIA has, it will strengthen the OECD National Team in meeting the 3-year target of Indonesia’s membership in the OECD,” said Airlangga.
In implementing this collaboration, ERIA will also prepare a study with the big theme of Future-Ready ASEAN, namely how Southeast Asia as a region is able to prepare itself for future economic issues, such as semiconductors and the digital economy. ERIA will conduct a Semiconductor Supply Chain Study in ASEAN and India.
Southeast Asia is projected to have a 10% share of global semiconductor assembly and testing in 2027. Meanwhile, revenue in the semiconductor market in Indonesia is projected to reach US$2.9 billion in 2029. Therefore, Indonesia needs to prepare its ecosystem carefully. The incentive scheme implemented by India can be a reference for Indonesia.
“Through this collaboration, we will support the Indonesian Government on international cooperation issues, such as efforts to increase exports, develop the automotive industry, develop the digital and semiconductor economic ecosystem, and Indonesia’s accession to the OECD and CPTPP,” said ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe.
Regarding the digital economy, ERIA will provide support in the form of research, policy support for digital transformation, and support for the start-up ecosystem in the region through the E-DISC (ERIA Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Center) platform.
The Indonesian government itself has launched the White Paper on the National Strategy for Development of the Indonesian Digital Economy 2030 as a guide for digital economy stakeholders. At the regional level, Indonesia’s leadership was demonstrated by the initiation of Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) negotiations at the 2023 ASEAN Indonesia Chairmanship. (AT Network)
