ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government has extended its safeguard investigation into imported expansible polystyrene (EPS) products with the HS code 3903.11.10.
Chair of the Indonesian Trade Safeguards Committee (KPPI) Franciska Simanjuntak said that the investigation into the safeguard extension was carried out on imported EPS products from Taiwan, China and Vietnam.
This step was taken by KPPI after receiving an official request from PT Kofuku Plastic Indonesia on June 21 2024. After receiving the report, KPPU discovered the fact that there was initial evidence related to serious losses or threats of serious losses experienced by PT Kofuku Plastic Indonesia. This can be seen from the decline in domestic industrial performance indicators in the 2021-2023 period, which includes a decline in production, domestic sales, productivity, used capacity and profits.
“The applicant still needs additional time to complete its structural adjustments optimally,” said Franciska in her statement, Tuesday, July 23 2024.
In detail, Franciska explained that PT Kofuku Plastic Indonesia informed that their structural adjustment program had only reached 27.74%. According to the corporation, this realization tends to be small.
Franciska said that the imposition of safeguards which had previously been implemented for three years on imported products was apparently not enough for the domestic industry to make structural adjustments.
“Therefore, the applicant asked KPPI to extend the imposition of safeguards so that PT Kofuku Plastic Indonesia can complete the structural adjustment program and compete with imported goods,” explained Franciska.
For your information, most imports of expansible polystyrene in 2023 will come from Taiwan with an import share of up to 47.09%, then China at 37.56%, and Vietnam at 13.36%.
Apart from these three countries, there are also imports from other developing countries, but the value is still below 3% of total imports in the same year.
“KPPI invites all interested parties to register themselves as interested parties so they can take part in the hearing, no later than August 1 2024,” he added. (ATN)
