ASIATODAY.ID, DENPASAR — President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Bali International Hospital (BIH) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The event marked a historic milestone in the development of Indonesia’s healthcare and medical tourism sector, particularly on the island of Bali.
In his remarks at the Bali Beach Convention Center, President Prabowo expressed his deep appreciation for all parties involved in the development of Sanur SEZ, describing it as Indonesia’s first major breakthrough in integrated, world-class healthcare services.
“I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to everyone who pioneered the development of this Special Economic Zone dedicated to healthcare. This is a first-of-its-kind breakthrough for our Republic,” said President Prabowo.

The Sanur SEZ is being developed as a world-class Health & Tourism Destination, with the primary goal of reducing the number of Indonesians seeking medical treatment abroad, which has long resulted in substantial foreign exchange outflows.
“We were informed that millions of Indonesians travel abroad for treatment, causing significant foreign exchange losses. With this initiative, we can now offer healthcare services that are on par with the best in the world,” Prabowo emphasized.
By 2045, the Sanur SEZ is projected to create over 18,375 new jobs, generate economic benefits including foreign exchange savings of up to IDR 86 trillion, and potential foreign exchange earnings of IDR 19.6 trillion from international medical tourism.
The Sanur SEZ features comprehensive infrastructure, including: The Bali International Hospital (BIH), built to international standards, A five-star hotel, The largest convention center in Bali with a 5,000-person capacity, An Ethnobotanical Garden spanning 4.9 hectares, home to over 380 species of medicinal plants, SME hubs and commercial zones supporting local businesses.
Bali International Hospital: A Healthcare Facility with Five-Star Ambience
During his tour of Bali International Hospital, President Prabowo praised the facility’s design and modern features, which resemble a luxury hotel.
“At first, I thought I was entering a hotel—the hospital floors are made of marble. This reflects Indonesia as a great, progressive, and dynamic nation. We must have world-class facilities so we can serve not only our citizens but also patients from Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and beyond,” said President Prabowo.
Accompanied by Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Dr. Lukman Ma’ruf, President Director of PT Pertamina Bina Medika IHC, President Prabowo toured various departments at the hospital. The hospital is already operational with: 255 beds, 8 operating rooms, 4 cardiology diagnostic rooms.
The hospital also offers integrated services in cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics—all under one roof, which is rare even by international standards.
“Usually, these types of advanced equipment are spread across different hospitals, but here at Bali International Hospital, they are all in one place,” explained Dr. Lukman.
Advanced Cancer Treatment with LINAC Technology
President Prabowo also visited ICON, the hospital’s oncology center for cancer patients, which features LINAC (Linear Accelerator) technology—an advanced treatment system for cancer patients, including those in the late stages.
“President Prabowo was impressed by the LINAC equipment, which represents cutting-edge cancer treatment technology and is expected to significantly support recovery for patients, especially those with stage 3 or 4 cancer,” Dr. Lukman noted.
President Prabowo expressed hope that Bali International Hospital would become a national benchmark for excellent healthcare services, offering world-class treatment while remaining accessible to the public.
“My special message is to continue delivering the best possible care to all who need it. This hospital represents a new face of Indonesia’s healthcare sector,” he affirmed.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several key cabinet members, including Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir, Minister of Investment Rosan Roeslani, Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. President Prabowo also expressed special thanks to international partners who played a vital role in making the Sanur SEZ and BIH a reality. (AT Network)
