ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia is taking a strategic role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) governance in the financial sector as central banks across the Asia-Pacific region move to accelerate responsible AI adoption while safeguarding economic and financial stability.
The commitment was reached at the 31st Executive Meeting of East Asia-Pacific Central Banks (EMEAP) Governors’ Meeting held in Singapore on July 23–24, 2026. The forum brought together central bank leaders from major Asia-Pacific economies to discuss opportunities and challenges arising from the rapid expansion of AI technologies.
The governors agreed that AI has the potential to transform central banking operations, improve policy effectiveness, enhance financial services, and strengthen economic analysis. However, they emphasized that technological advancement must be accompanied by robust governance, effective supervision, and comprehensive risk management.
AI Transformation Requires Strong Governance
Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo highlighted that AI could significantly improve productivity, efficiency, and innovation within central banks and the financial sector over the medium and long term.
“Successful AI adoption does not only depend on technology, but also on synergy between people, processes, and strong governance,” Perry said.
At Bank Indonesia, AI adoption is being implemented gradually through improvements in data quality and metadata management, stronger governance frameworks, enhanced human resource capabilities, and the development of new innovations.
The central bank also emphasized the importance of maintaining data sovereignty and protecting strategic digital infrastructure amid the growing dependence on advanced technologies.
Asia-Pacific Central Banks Address Emerging AI Risks
The EMEAP Governors recognized that AI adoption in financial systems brings new challenges, including cybersecurity threats, dependency on AI technology providers and cloud computing services, as well as interconnected risks among financial institutions across borders.
As financial activities become increasingly digital and interconnected, regional cooperation is considered essential to ensure AI development remains secure, transparent, and aligned with financial stability objectives.
The governors agreed to strengthen collaboration through knowledge sharing, exchange of best practices, development of AI governance frameworks, enhancement of cyber resilience, and joint efforts to combat digital fraud and scams that increasingly operate across borders.
Indonesia to Lead EMEAP Agenda in 2027
Indonesia will further strengthen its regional role by hosting and chairing the 32nd EMEAP Governors’ Meeting in 2027.
The leadership role reflects Indonesia’s growing influence in shaping Asia-Pacific financial policies amid rapid digital transformation and the emergence of AI as a strategic economic capability.
Beyond technology adoption, the regional consensus underscores a broader message: the future of AI in finance will depend not only on innovation, but also on trust, security, and responsible governance. (AT Network)
