ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia has signed a contract to acquire 12 M-346 F Block 20 advanced fighter trainer aircraft from Italian defense and aerospace company Leonardo, becoming the first country in Asia to introduce the latest version of the platform as Jakarta accelerates the modernization of its air force.

The agreement, signed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense through PT ESystem Solutions Indonesia, follows a Letter of Intent announced in February 2026. Deliveries of the aircraft are expected to begin in 2030.

The procurement package extends beyond the aircraft themselves, covering technology localization, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), pilot training, and human resource development. The collaboration is also expected to support Indonesia’s long-term objective of expanding its domestic aerospace and defense industrial capabilities.

Designed as both an advanced jet trainer and a light multi-role combat aircraft, the M-346 F Block 20 enables air forces to conduct high-level pilot training while providing operational combat capability. Indonesia will become the 23rd operator of the M-346 platform and the first country in Asia to field the new Block 20 standard, following its introduction in Europe and North America.

Leonardo said the program will play a key role in Indonesia’s defense modernization roadmap by delivering advanced technology and enhancing the operational readiness of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU).

“The introduction of the M-346 F in Indonesia demonstrates not only the aircraft’s capabilities but also the country’s growing confidence in Leonardo’s defense technologies,” said Lorenzo Mariani, Co-General Manager of Leonardo.

He added that the company is committed to expanding its long-term partnership with Indonesia through industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and support for the country’s aerospace development strategy.

The acquisition underscores Indonesia’s continued investment in modern air power as Southeast Asia’s largest economy strengthens the capabilities and readiness of its armed forces through strategic international defense partnerships. (ATN)
