ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia is ready to adopt tuna cultivation technology from Turkiye.

To start this collaboration, the Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono visited the tuna cultivation location in the Izmir sea, Turkiye.

“Several areas of our waters are home to tuna fish, so we need innovation so that the productivity of this commodity increases and its sustainability is maintained,” said Minister Trenggono in an official broadcast in Jakarta, quoted Thursday, January 25 2024.

The type of tuna cultivated in the Izmir Sea is Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus). The tuna comes from being caught in nature by being slowly herded to the cultivation location.

The grow-out process takes five to six months in cages measuring 50 to 60 meters at depths of up to 18 meters. During rearing, tuna are fed pelagic fish.

Minister Trenggono’s visit coincided with the tuna harvest. The harvested fish are immediately brought to Japan using transport ships.

“The tuna is frozen on the ship at a temperature of minus 60⁰ C and sailed straight to Japan. This is what ensures the quality of the tuna and the price is higher. The price of tuna is determined based on the grade in the market,” explained Trenggono.

Indonesia is one of the tuna exporting countries on the world market. Based on data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, tuna along with tuna and skipjack are among the leading export commodities for Indonesian fishery products with a value of $927.18 million in 2023. (AT Network)
