ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – Indonesia urges the United Nations (UN) to immediately form an independent commission to investigate Israel’s attack on Palestinian Gaza.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, conveyed this at an emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly regarding Israel’s illegal actions in the occupied Palestinian territories in New York on Thursday (26/10/2023) local time.
Previously, Foreign Minister Retno also urged the UN Security Council to do the same to stop violence in Gaza.
“We have stood countless times in this hall to reduce the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Palestine. Countless times we have held emergency meetings at the UN General Assembly regarding the fate of the Palestinian people. However, there are countless times our hopes have been dashed because of narrow political interests,” he said, quoted from an official statement, Friday (27/10/2023).
Retno emphasized that she was speaking not only on behalf of a Foreign Minister, but also on behalf of a woman, a mother and a grandmother.
He asked UN member states to use their hearts to defend justice and humanity.
Retno said that the world seemed to refuse to see the reality of the disaster in Gaza. In fact, to this day the attacks and massacres in Gaza continue.
In the midst of this disaster, he regretted that the UN Security Council had failed to take the necessary steps. That is why Retno demanded that the UN General Assembly must prove that the UN upholds human dignity and life.
“My presence here is to defend humanity. Indonesia condemns the violence committed by Israel against Palestine, including attacks on hospitals and places of worship in Gaza. The indiscriminate killings, kidnappings and collective punishment of civilians must be condemned as inhumane and in violation of international law,” he continued.
Apart from that, he said there were three plus one concrete steps that were urgently taken.
The first is to stop Israeli aggression to prevent continued civilian casualties, one of which is by ceasefire and preventing attacks from occurring again.
“For this reason, the UN General Assembly must hold Israel accountable, including by establishing an independent commission of inquiry to investigate Israel’s attacks on hospitals and places of worship and the mass expulsion of civilians in Gaza,” he explained.
Second, ensuring access to humanitarian aid and protection of civilians. Indonesia urges the UN General Assembly and relevant UN agencies to increase efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza residents.
Third, reject the forced displacement of civilians in Gaza. Israel’s call to leave northern Gaza worsens the conditions of those whose homes have been destroyed and access to electricity, gas, fuel and water restricted.
“This is a crime against humanity. The UN SMU must urge an end to the evacuation order by Israel. Civilians, especially children, must be protected and given safe space to move,” said Retno.
Meanwhile, the plus one in question is overcoming the root of the problem of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He emphasized that peace would not be established until the roots of the conflict were addressed, and urged that the peace process to realize a two-state solution must be restarted. (AT Network)
