ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The city of Jakarta is starting to be prepared to face the potential for a megathrust earthquake.
The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency is now continuing to strengthen strategic steps for the community regarding preparedness to face these disasters.
“This has always been our priority, how do we take preparedness steps,” said Head of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency’s Prevention Sub-Group, Rian Sarsono in the dialogue “Jakarta Province’s Preparedness for the Threat of Megathrust Earthquakes”, Tuesday, September 10 2024.
He hopes that strategic steps can reduce the risk of disasters, especially earthquakes.
“We are trying to take strategic steps and we hope that what we have prepared can reduce the risk of disasters, especially earthquakes,” said Rian.
These steps are, first, strengthening existing regulations. Second, building a culture of disaster awareness in society for disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
Moreover, said Rian, currently infrastructure development in Jakarta is increasingly massive, such as Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) transportation to the Jakarta Integrated Highway (LRT) and particle housing.
Specifically for earthquakes, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency is also building disaster resilient buildings within the scope of the Jakarta provincial government. Then, increase the capacity of stakeholders to respond if a disaster occurs such as a megathrust earthquake.
Earthquake sources around Jakarta that have the potential to impact the Jakarta area include three active faults, namely the Baribis Fault with a potential magnitude of 6.5, the Lembang Fault with a potential of M6.8 and the Cimandiri Fault with a potential of M6.7.
Apart from that, one source of the earthquake was the megathrust subduction in the Sunda Strait (Banten) with a potential of M8.7.
“From the southern side of Java there is subduction of the Sunda Strait megathrust with a potential magnitude of M8.7,” he said.
The biggest potential earthquake that could damage Jakarta is from the southern subduct zone of Banten with a magnitude of 8.7 with a duration of 15 seconds and the primary danger is the collapse of buildings or structures.
According to Rian, if an earthquake occurs there will be light to moderate damage to buildings of good construction or in accordance with Indonesian National Standards. However, buildings that do not comply with standards can cause serious damage.
Rian explained that his party also continues to build a culture of awareness by carrying out several educational steps to increase capacity. Furthermore, earthquake simulations in several public facilities such as hospitals, educational units, government buildings, and community groups have been carried out from 2015 until now.
This education and simulation is a priority and routine activity carried out by the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency together with the disaster activist community and all related parties in Jakarta.
“In carrying out assistance to disaster safe education units there are three pillars, namely safe facilities, education and management. From 2017 to 2023 we were only in pillars two and three, but in 2024 we will try to start initiating how we can also carry out a fast process or a quick assessment to assess the facilities or structures in the education unit building,” he said.
Rian hopes that people will become smarter in processing information related to the megathrust earthquake and will not panic too much.
“The most important thing is that the Jakarta Provincial Government together with related parties continue to strive to educate the public in order to create a disaster resilient society,” he added. (AT Network)
