ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A plane belonging to Japan Airlines with passengers still on board caught fire on the runway at Tokyo Haneda Airport, Japan on Tuesday afternoon, January 2 2024.
The plane caught fire after allegedly colliding with a Coast Guard plane, Nippon TV reported, quoted by DW, Tuesday, January 2 2024.
So far the exact cause of the incident is still unknown. Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed flames shooting out of the windows of the Japan Airlines plane.
A Japan Airlines spokesman said the plane departing from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido was carrying more than 300 passengers.
The plane, flight number 516, stopped, then the emergency stairs opened and people ran out.
According to Japan Airlines claims, the plane contained 379 passengers and crew. All are reported to be safe.
All Haneda Airport runways have been closed since around 6 pm local time. Some flights were diverted to Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture.
Footage by Japanese media NHK showed firefighters trying to extinguish the flames caused by the fire.
The incident adds to the list of air accidents in Japan. (ATN)
