ASIATODAY.ID, JEMBER – The Japan Red Cross Society (JRCS) and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) have designated the southern coastal area of Jember Regency, East Java as a pilot project area for megatrust earthquake disaster preparedness which could trigger a tsunami.
“JRCS and PMI have designated the southern coast of Jember as a megatrust pilot project after carrying out a selection and assessment process last July,” said Head of PMI Jember Disaster Management Division Mamang Pratidina, Tuesday, September 3 2024.
JRCS assesses that 33 districts are worthy of receiving the preparedness program out of 228 districts/cities that are considered prone to mega-earthquakes possibly accompanied by tsunamis.
“From 33 regencies/cities, 5 regencies and cities were selected until finally Jember and Sukabumi regencies became regions as pilot projects for megatrust earthquake preparedness,” he said.
Mamang explained that an assessment had been carried out by JRCS, Central PMI, and PMI East Java on the district/city PMI Headquarters which would carry out preparedness activities in early July 2024.
“The assessment is intended to find out the capacity of PMI Jember to carry out preparedness to carry out the JRCS program and face megatrust,” he said.
Meanwhile, based on data from the Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency, it is recorded that there are six sub-districts in the southern coastal region that could potentially be affected by the megatrust earthquake, namely Puger, Kencong, Gumukmas, Ambulu, Wuluhan and Tempurejo sub-districts.
