ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The energy sector in Southeast Asia continues to rise and shows rapid development following the discovery of significant gas from the Layaran-1 Exploration well, South Andaman Cooperation Contract (KKS), around 100 kilometers off the coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
This discovery with a potential of more than 6 TCF of gas-in-place was announced by the Special Task Force for Implementing Indonesian Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) and Mubadala Energy, an international energy company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on December 19, 2023.
Mubadala Energy is the operator of the South Andaman Gross Split PSC and this is the first deep well operated by the company, which was drilled to a depth of 4,208 meters at a sea water depth of 1,207 meters.
In this well, a large gas column was found with a thickness of more than 230 meters in the Oligocene sandstone reservoir. Complete data acquisition including wireline, coring, sampling and production test (DST) was carried out. The well successfully delivered excellent quality gas with a capacity of 30 mmscf/d.
This large gas resources discovery is in line with the Indonesian Government’s plan to achieve the oil production target of 1 million barrels per day (BOEPD) and natural gas of 12 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (BSCFD) in 2030.
Head of SKK Migas, Dwi Soetjipto expressed his appreciation for the large gas discovery in South Andaman which is operated by Mubadala Energy Cooperation Contract Contractor (KKKS).
“On behalf of SKK Migas, I would like to express my gratitude for the hard work and strong dedication shown by Mubadala Energy in carrying out deep sea drilling. “And I would like to congratulate Mubadala Energy on its success in finding large gas reserves,” said Dwi.
Based on a report from Mubadala Energy (South Andaman) RSC LTD which states that the Layaran-1 well discovery has the potential to reach 6 tcf gas-in-place, so this discovery could exceed the discovery of the Geng North-1 well, Kutai basin and enter the top 3 in the world. SKK Migas will follow up on the report by conducting further evaluations and studies.
Dwi said that the big discovery in South Andaman would be a beautiful gift towards the end of 2023.
“The upstream oil and gas industry will make a new history, the first time Indonesia will have two giant discoveries in the same year in 2023,” he added.
Successive large gas discoveries in 2023 demonstrate the success of exploration activities which will be the main theme of the upstream oil and gas industry in 2023 and will continue in 2024.
Dwi said that large gas discoveries in South Andaman would increase the competitiveness of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry and encourage increased upstream oil and gas investment in the future.
“We are optimistic that the International Oil Company (IOC) will again place Indonesia as its investment portfolio. “Hopefully successive giant discoveries will become a game changer for the national upstream oil and gas industry,” concluded Dwi.
Commenting on this major strategic development, Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed, CEO of Mubadala Energy, said “With our strategy to expand our gas portfolio to support the energy transition, this development offers significant commercial opportunities and adds momentum to our strategic growth. This is not only a significant development for Mubadala Energy but also a major milestone for Indonesia’s energy security. We are proud to have achieved this by leveraging our world-class technical and operational capabilities.”
“This new confirmed discovery is the second consecutive success for Mubadala Energy in the Andaman region, after the success of Timpan-1 in the Andaman II PSC. “These discoveries add to the volume of material contingent and provide a foundation for Mubadala Energy’s continued growth in the region,” he added.
