ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Global cyber security and digital privacy company, Kaspersky, revealed that mobile banking (m-banking) malware attacks will increase by 32% on an annual basis (year-on-year/yoy) throughout 2023.
Based on its Financial Threats Report (2023), Kaspersky stated that in the last 12 months there has been a substantial increase in the number of users encountering mobile banking (m-banking) trojan malware, with attacks on Android users increasing by 32% in 2023.
“The most common banking Trojan is Bian.h, which accounts for 22% of all Android attacks,” said the report, quoted on Wednesday, May 8 2024.
Geographically, Kaspersky said that Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan recorded the highest number of users encountering banking trojan malware. Meanwhile, Turkiye leads mobile banking malware attacks, with almost 3% of users affected or 2.98%.
However, the number of users affected by financial PC malware will decrease by 11% in 2023. Meanwhile, Ramnit and Zbot were identified as the most dominant malware groups, and targeted more than 50% of affected users.
Still referring to the same report, Kaspersky also revealed that financial phishing was still a significant threat throughout last year. These cybercrimes accounted for 27.32% of all phishing attacks against corporate users and 30.68% against individual users.
Meanwhile, a number of well-known electronics store brands were identified as the main attraction, with 41.65% of phishing attempts detected.
Additionally, PayPal phishing represents 54.78% of phishing pages targeting users of electronic payment systems. The report also highlights the growth of phishing related to crypto assets by 16% yoy from 5.04 million detections in 2022 to 5.84 million detections last year. E-shop phishing was identified as the most common, accounting for 41.65% of all financial phishing pages.
In detail, Amazon emerged as the most imitated online store, accounting for 34% of phishing attempts, Apple for 18.66%, and Netflix for 14.71%.
Furthermore, the report also stated that PayPal was the most targeted payment system with 54.73% of attacks. Meanwhile, phishing and fraud related to crypto assets also continues to grow.
Kaspersky prevented 5,838,499 attempts to follow crypto-themed phishing links, up 16% yoy. (ATN)
