ASIATODAY.ID, SINGAPORE – A new era of cross-border travel is about to begin in Southeast Asia.
By the end of 2026, Malaysia and Singapore will be officially linked by the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link)—a high-frequency rail service that will cut travel time between the two countries to just five minutes.
The system will connect Woodlands North MRT Station in Singapore with Bukit Chagar RTS Station in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, two critical border hubs long known for heavy congestion.
High Frequency, Massive Capacity
The RTS Link is designed to ease chronic traffic jams at one of the world’s busiest land crossings. With a shortest headway of 3.6 minutes, commuters will experience significantly reduced waiting times during peak hours.
Key operational details include:
– Eight train sets at launch (December 2026)
– Capacity of over 600 passengers per trip
– Up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction
– Daily operations from 6:00 AM to midnight
The project is expected to transform daily mobility for thousands of cross-border workers and travelers.
AI-Powered Immigration in Just Seconds
Despite the ultra-short journey, passengers will still undergo immigration clearance. However, the process will be dramatically streamlined:
– Around 100 AI-powered automated e-gates
– Clearance time of approximately 7 seconds per passenger
– 10 security screening lanes
– 18 baggage scanners
– Dedicated lanes for travelers without luggage
The goal is to make border crossings nearly seamless while maintaining security standards.
Affordable Fares, Cheaper Than Driving
The proposed fare ranges between 5 and 7 Singapore dollars (approximately USD 4–5 per trip). This is significantly cheaper than traveling by private car, which can cost up to 50 Singapore dollars per day in cross-border fees starting January 2027.
After six months of operation, the RTS Link is set to replace the existing KTM Shuttle Tebrau service in June 2027, marking a full transition to the new rail system.
A New Chapter in Regional Integration
Beyond transportation, the RTS Link represents deeper economic integration between Malaysia and Singapore. By dramatically reducing travel time and improving connectivity, the project is expected to boost trade, tourism, and workforce mobility across the Johor–Singapore corridor.
