ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, erupted again by launching volcanic ash as high as 800 meters from the top of the active volcano.
The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that the eruption occurred on Sunday, December 3 2023, at 09.08 WIB.
The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 72 millimeters and a duration of approximately 34 seconds.
The ash plume was observed to be black with thick intensity leaning towards the northwest.
Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, South Lampung, Andi Suardi, Sunday, said that Mount Anak Krakatau is now at level III or alert status.
PVMBG recommends the public not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau or carry out activities within a five kilometer radius of the active crater.
He said that the closest settlement to Mount Anak Krakatau is on Sebesi Island, which is 16.5 kilometers away.
Andi appealed to the public and fishermen not to approach the Mount Anak Krakatau area within a radius of 5 kilometers.
“Currently Mount Anak Krakatau is at level III, alert, with recommendations from the public, fishermen and mountain climbers, not to approach the mountain within a radius of five kilometers,” he said.
Since the birth of Mount Anak Krakatau in June 1927 until now, eruptions have occurred repeatedly, resulting in Mount Anak Krakatau growing bigger and taller.
The eruption character of Mount Anak Krakatau is in the form of explosive eruptions and effusive eruptions with the eruption rest period ranging from one to six years. (AT Network)
