ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Many would assume Thailand or Singapore dominates Southeast Asia’s wellness economy. But the latest report from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) tells a different story: Indonesia leads the region with an impressive contribution of USD 56.4 billion in 2023.
This achievement positions Indonesia as the largest contributor to the wellness economy in Southeast Asia, ranking 6th in the Asia-Pacific region and recording the 3rd fastest growth in the area.
Indonesia Surpasses Regional Rivals
The GWI data shows that Indonesia’s contribution outpaces neighboring countries long known for health and wellness tourism. Globally, the wellness economy was valued at USD 6.32 trillion in 2023 and is projected to grow by 7.44% annually, reaching USD 9.68 trillion by 2029.
Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, emphasized the importance of seizing this momentum.
“Global travelers are increasingly willing to pay more for authentic, healing, and transformative experiences. Indonesia is uniquely positioned to meet this demand,” she said during the launch of “Wonderful Indonesia Wellness 2025” at Balairung Soesilo Soedarman, Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
Wonderful Indonesia Wellness 2025
The flagship international event will be held from November 1–30, 2025 in Surakarta, Central Java, and Yogyakarta. The program is a collaboration between the Keraton Kasunanan Hadiningrat Surakarta and the Yogyakarta Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD DIY), combining two major cultural wellness festivals: the Jogja Cultural Wellness Festival (JCWF) 2025 and the Royal Surakarta Wellness Festival (RSWF).
According to Vinsensius Jemadu, Deputy for Event Development at the Ministry of Tourism, Indonesia aims to position itself as a global wellness hub.
“Our vision is to make Indonesia a world-class wellness destination, showcasing the nation’s distinctive healthy lifestyle traditions that cannot be found elsewhere,” he explained.
The Philosophy of Wellness in Indonesia
Gusti Kanjeng Ratu (GKR) Bendara, Chair of BPPD DIY and JCWF 2025, highlighted that wellness in Yogyakarta is not just a lifestyle trend, but a deeply rooted philosophy of life.
“The concept of ‘Salarasing Urip, Wiraga, Wirasa, Wirama’ embodies unity of life, body, feeling, and rhythm. This is the essence of Yogyakarta’s wellness culture,” she said.
Meanwhile, GRAy Putri Purnaningrum, Project Leader of RSWF, explained that Surakarta’s wellness traditions reflect the principle of ‘Titi, Ngadi, Ngusadi’, meaning that resolving life’s challenges requires healing and self-appreciation.
Indonesia Steps Onto the Global Stage
With its vast potential and the upcoming international event, Indonesia has a strong opportunity to capture a larger share of the global wellness tourism market.
Minister Widiyanti concluded with optimism:
“Indonesia must not only be seen as a travel destination, but as a world-class wellness stage—bringing pride to our nation while captivating the world.” (AT Network)
