ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – Foreign Ministers from members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held a number of meetings in New York on November 29 2023 to discuss concrete steps in dealing with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The meeting was held in line with the commemoration of International Palestine Solidarity Day which is celebrated every November 29.
“This year, all OIC Foreign Ministers who are in New York are present at the commemoration to show strong support for Palestine. “In this commemoration, the President of Indonesia also delivered a written message which essentially reiterated Indonesia’s support for the struggle of the Palestinian people,” said Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi, quoted Saturday, December 2 2023.
Key Meetings with China and the UN
To follow up on the mandate given by the OIC Leader at the OIC Summit in Riyadh 11 November, the OIC Foreign Ministers met with the Chinese Foreign Minister as President of the UN Security Council in New York.
The meeting agreed on a number of important things. Among them, the urgency of the international community to ensure the establishment of a safe aid route to the Gaza Strip. Next, renew demands to return to the path of peace through the implementation of international resolutions regarding the two-state solution.
It was also agreed that efforts would be given to the Palestinian people to establish their own state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In addition, the Foreign Ministers highlighted the responsibility of the international community to reject selectivity in applying international legal and moral standards. They condemn all forms of Israeli settlements and forced evictions of the Palestinian people, including in East Jerusalem.
In a meeting with the UN Secretary General, the Foreign Ministers emphasized the urgency of releasing prisoners and sending humanitarian aid. They also underlined the protection of civilians, the application of international law, and the implementation of UN resolutions regarding a two-state solution to provide legitimate rights to the Palestinian people.
They also reiterated the importance of the international community in ensuring the safe passage of humanitarian aid to Gaza and rejecting all forms of Israeli settlements and forced evictions of the Palestinian people.
Spotlight on the UN Security Council
At the UN Security Council meeting, Indonesia highlighted the lack of effectiveness of the current humanitarian ceasefire because it was too short and vulnerable to chaos that could prevent the situation in Gaza from changing in a sustainable way.
Indonesia emphasized three crucial points. First, the importance of providing humanitarian assistance without obstacles to the entire Gaza area with careful monitoring. Second, there is a need to fully respect international law, including international humanitarian law. Lastly, the importance of achieving a permanent ceasefire to end all forms of atrocities.
