ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto instructed that the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) be completed as soon as possible.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto said that President Prabowo had given the green light for a number of requests from the European Union to be approved. Thus, the agreement can be signed immediately.

“There are two or three issues in the IEU-CEPA negotiations and after the President gave approval, we have communicated with the Minister of Trade that it is hoped that technical matters can be resolved and can be escalated to legal drafting,” said Airlangga, Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

Airlangga explained that there are two issues that are still being requested by the European Union, namely digital transmission and import-export transparency.

President Prabowo, said Airlangga, does not want technical issues like that to become obstacles.

“We have given the same concessions in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), where Indonesia is the lead so that like in international agreements, they usually want to get facilities that are equivalent to other agreements,” explained Airlangga.

Previously, a number of representatives from European Union countries had met with Airlangga and other government officials at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. Both parties discussed the IEU-CEPA negotiations.

After the meeting, the Director General of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, claimed that much progress had been achieved in the IEU-CEPA negotiations.

“Both Indonesia and the European Union want the trade agreement to be completed soon,” he said. (AT Network)
