ASIATODAY.ID, BALI – President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that Indonesia is fully committed to accelerating the energy transition, through the addition of New and Renewable Energy on a large scale, considering Indonesia’s status which is rich in green energy potential.
“Based on calculations, the potential for New and Renewable Energy is estimated to reach 3,600 Gigawatts, both from solar energy, wind, geothermal, ocean currents, waves, bioenergy, and also from hydro power,” said Jokowi at the Opening of the 2023 World Hydropower Congress in Nusa Dua Bali , Tuesday (31/10).
Indonesia has more than 4,400 potential rivers, and 128 of them are large rivers. The Mamberamo River in Papua has a potential of 24,000 MW, the Kayan River in North Kalimantan has a potential of 13,000 MW.
“The Mamberamo River has a potential of 24,000 MW, the Kayan River has a potential of 13,000 MW, this is in Kalimantan which will later be used as a green industrial park electricity source in Kalimantan. This is a huge potential that we can exploit for the future of the earth and future generations,” he said. Jokowi.
However, Indonesia also faces various challenges, one of which is related to the location of hydro power sources which are far from centers of electricity demand. The government has created a blueprint for accelerating transmission lines to overcome this challenge.
“The Indonesian government has created a blueprint for accelerating transmission lines that connect hydropower locations to economic growth centers and industrial growth centers, so that their useful value will be higher,” explained Jokowi.
Another challenge is related to funding and technology transfer. Jokowi stated that to face this challenge, investment and collaboration with the world’s hydro ecosystem is needed.
“Another challenge is funding and technology transfer. This requires quite a bit of investment and requires collaboration with all the hydro ecosystem powers in the world. I hope that this World Hydropower Congress can become a collaborative forum that produces policy recommendations and increases investment for the benefits of water energy for a sustainable green economy,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, said that renewable energy is expected to encourage industrial development and contribute to energy security, as well as achieving Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission target in 2060 or sooner.
“The Indonesian government has committed to implementing the energy transition to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060. In line with this commitment, this congress will produce recommendations, which are planned to be published at the end of the congress and will be presented at COP 28,” concluded Arifin. (AT Network)
