Shell Closes 9 Public Fuel Filling Stations in North Sumatra

Shell Indonesia. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Shell Indonesia has officially stopped operational activities of nine retail networks of Shell Public Fuel Filling Stations (SPBU) in North Sumatra as of June 1, 2024.

Managing Director of Mobility Shell Indonesia Ingrid Siburian said the decision was made in line with Shell’s global strategy to create products with more value and lower emissions.

Shell, said Ingrid, will focus on discipline and simplification and business performance.

“Shell Indonesia expresses its appreciation to its customers, all Shell gas station management partners in North Sumatra,” said Ingrid in an official statement, Friday, May 31 2024.

Shell Indonesia appreciates the support from management partners in North Sumatra, including PT Multi Mineral Trading, PT Central Energi Indonesia, PT Kei Jaya Sentosa, PT Daya Energi Sukses, PT Multi Energy Lestarindo, PT Argya Energy Sumatra, and PT Wirausaha Sukses Makmur.

Apart from that, Shell also positively assesses the support from the central government and regional governments for Shell’s retail operations in North Sumatra so far.

“We also want to express our gratitude to the people of North Sumatra who have supported us tremendously in carrying out our activities so far,” he said.

For reference, Shell headquarters plans to close around a thousand gas stations in several countries by 2025 as part of the company’s energy transition strategy. Instead, Shell will invest more massively in public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) until 2030 or the next 6 years.

“We plan to divest around 500 gas stations including from joint ventures every year between 2024 and 2025,” Shell said in the 2024 Energy Transition Strategy Report.

Shell currently operates more than 46 thousand retail locations worldwide, the majority of which are petrol stations. However, Shell plans to close a thousand of them, or less than 3% of the total.

Although the number is relatively small, the London-based company said the move was a change in focus as the company wants to help meet the increasing demand for public electric vehicle charging stations.

The company did not specify where the gas stations to be closed were located.

However, they did provide some details about the addition of SPKLU. Shell plans to increase SPKLU operations worldwide to 200 thousand units by 2030.

Currently, Shell has operated 54 thousand SPKLU in a number of countries. (ATN)
