ASIATODAY.ID, TAIPEI – Taiwan is asserting itself as a democracy stronghold in the heart of the Indo-Pacific, standing firm against multifaceted pressure from Beijing.
President Lai Ching-te received US Senator Ruben Gallego at the Presidential Office on January 23, 2026, highlighting Taiwan’s strategic role on the global stage.
During the meeting, President Lai declared unequivocally that Taiwan is now “Taiwan belongs to the world,” a key player in maintaining regional peace and stability.
“We cherish peace, but Taiwan is ready to defend itself,” Lai said, emphasizing that credible self-defense is essential before seeking international support.
Taiwan has proposed a USD 40 billion, eight-year defense budget to strengthen its domestic defense industry, develop advanced technologies, and accelerate the deployment of the T-Dome defense system—a strategic shield and symbol of national resilience in the Taiwan Strait.
Senator Gallego reaffirmed bipartisan support in the US Congress for Taiwan’s sovereignty.
“Taiwan deserves its place in the world. This consensus will not waver,” he said, underlining the US role as a de facto protector of the island on the international stage.
The meeting comes amid escalating pressure from Beijing, including economic coercion, military threats, and cognitive warfare, raising concern across the Indo-Pacific.
Yet Taiwan remains a symbol of democratic resilience, demonstrating that courage can counter intimidation.
