Taiwan Rejects ‘One China’ Principle, Vows Sovereignty is Non-Negotiable

ASIATODAY.ID, TAIPEI – Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has firmly rejected recent statements by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who once again promoted Beijing’s so-called “One China principle” during his tour of several African countries.

MOFA condemned Wang Yi’s remarks, made during visits to Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho from January 8 to 11, 2026, describing them as misleading, historically inaccurate, and a serious violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of China (ROC) Taiwan.

During the trip, Wang Yi reiterated claims that Taiwan is an “inseparable part of China.” Taiwan’s foreign ministry stressed that such assertions are false narratives with no legal or factual basis, and are deliberately designed to distort international understanding of Taiwan’s status.

MOFA also lodged a strong protest against the Joint Press Release issued following the China–African Union Strategic Dialogue on January 8, as well as against statements by officials from the three African countries, which Taiwan said reflected factual inaccuracies and an apparent effort to appease Beijing.

“Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country. Its future can only be determined by the will of the 23 million people of Taiwan,” MOFA stated on January 13, 2026, emphasizing that no external power has the right to decide Taiwan’s fate.

According to MOFA, any claim suggesting that Taiwan is under the sovereignty of another country is completely unacceptable.

China’s continued global campaign of disinformation—through political pressure, economic inducements, and diplomatic rhetoric—poses a serious challenge to international order and global peace, the ministry warned.

Taiwan urged the international community to carefully examine the growing pattern of authoritarian interference by China in the internal affairs of other countries, warning that such practices undermine shared democratic values and regional stability.

The ministry added that the ROC Taiwan government has long provided substantial assistance to like-minded African countries, particularly in the fields of education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure development, delivering tangible and sustainable results.

MOFA also called on all nations to uphold the principles of sovereignty, independence, and rational decision-making when engaging in international cooperation, stressing that such an approach serves the long-term interests of both governments and their people.

Looking ahead, Taiwan reaffirmed its willingness to deepen friendly cooperation with like-minded African partners based on mutual respect, equality, and shared benefits.

“Taiwan will continue to safeguard its sovereignty and uphold the values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, while contributing constructively to sustainable development in Africa and the global community,” MOFA concluded. (AT Network)
