ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The poor governance of China’s smelter industry in Indonesia is in sharp focus.

The Indonesian government through the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has asked the Chinese government to carry out a comprehensive assessment and improvement of the governance of the smelter industry of Chinese companies in Indonesia.

Minister Agus emphasized this when he met with the Chinese minister of industry who visited the Indonesian Ministry of Industry office some time ago.

“I conveyed this firmly to the Chinese industry minister because almost all investors in these smelter projects are Chinese State-Owned Enterprises. “So the government’s responsibility is still very large,” said Agus to journalists in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 3 2024.

Apart from that, Agus also assessed that the process of replacing Chinese workers in Chinese-owned processing factories was not going well. Many new workers do not fully understand the field conditions and culture in Indonesia.

“Since last November, I have asked for strengthening the supervision and control carried out on smelter companies, especially smelter companies originating from China,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, regarding the recent explosion case of PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel’s nickel smelter in Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), Central Sulawesi, the Ministry of Industry will impose sanctions on PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel if it is proven to have violated standard operating procedures (SOP).

Agus said that his party would impose sanctions according to the level of error that would be revealed from the results of the ongoing investigation.

“Regarding sanctions for industrial business permits, of course we will look at the extent of management’s responsibility,” stressed Agus.

So far, the Ministry of Industry has sent a team to carry out a comprehensive evaluation regarding management, governance, operational procedures and disaster management at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel. Because, in industrial business permits, business actors are obliged to fulfill business commitments, including operational security.

Meanwhile, criminal sanctions are the domain of law enforcement which will be handled by the police. Likewise with the implementation of occupational health and safety (K3) at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel which is currently being investigated by the Ministry of Manpower.

“There will definitely be sanctions, especially as Minister Luhut Binsar Pndjaitan has also expressly ordered the police to carry out an investigation,” he said. (AT Network)
