ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – Indonesia encourages United Nations member countries to recognize the state of Palestine, as an investment for a more peaceful and just world. This was conveyed by the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi at the High-Level Week General Debate of the 79th UN General Assembly Session, Saturday, September 28 2024.
Minister Retno also encouraged the Permanent Member countries of the UN Security Council to take concrete action to stop Israel’s violations of international law and Israel’s immunity from these laws.
“The mandate of the UN Security Council is to create peace, not perpetuate war or even support the perpetrators of the war itself,” said Retno.
Furthermore, Minister Retno encouraged leadership without hegemony, namely real global leadership and guiding joint action by listening to the interests of all parties, promoting collaboration and hope.
In this context, Retno proposed three key priorities. First, advancing peace through inclusive peace. Second, ensuring a sustainable future by achieving shared prosperity. Third, build bridges to ensure global collaboration.
Indonesia has implemented these three things through its international activities. History proves that Indonesia has always voiced the interests of Global South countries, including through holding the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955.
Over the last 10 years, Indonesia has demonstrated solution-based leadership in responding to global problems. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia has led the formation of the Pandemic Fund and chaired the COVAX AMC Engagement Group to ensure equal access for all countries to obtain vaccines.
“Apart from that, the Indonesian Presidency at the G20 in 2022 succeeded in bridging the sharp differences in interests between several member countries due to the geopolitical situation at that time,” said Retno.
Retno emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to world peace, including by involving women’s participation. Indonesia encourages women’s empowerment, including by encouraging equal access for women throughout the world, including in Afghanistan, to education.
“Women’s empowerment will encourage peace and prosperity,” concluded Retno. (AT Network)
