ASIATODAY.ID, BEIJING – China has officially imposed an additional 15 percent tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, starting Monday, February 10 2025. A number of goods from the US will also be subject to a 10 percent import duty.
Previously, the Chinese government announced that additional tariffs would be imposed starting February 10 on imported goods from the US, including coal, LNG, crude oil, agricultural machinery, large vehicles and pickup trucks.
The steps taken by China are a reaction to recent US policies. Previously, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to tax imported goods from Canada, Mexico and China.
The US imposed a 10 percent tariff on goods from China in addition to the tariffs already in place. The decision also repealed the previous de minimis rule, which exempted goods worth less than US$800 from entering the US.
Bai Ming, deputy director of China’s Ministry of Commerce’s International Institute for Marketing Research, said that a new round of the trade war between the world’s two largest economies “has already begun.”
According to him, China’s countermeasures appropriately targeted important sectors in the US and minimized the impact of the trade war.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously emphasized that no one would be a winner in a trade war. (Sputnik)
