ASIATODAY.ID, HAMILTON – The United Nations rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians outside the Gaza Strip.
“We oppose any plans that would cause the forced displacement of the population or lead to ethnic cleansing in any form,” said UN spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, in a press conference, on Monday, January 27, 2025.
On Saturday, Trump called for “cleaning up” Gaza and moving Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan, calling the territory “a location that has been completely destroyed” by Israel’s genocidal war.
Dujarric reminded that Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League had also rejected Trump’s proposal.
Egypt, Jordan, the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation issued statements categorically rejecting any calls for the transfer or relocation of Palestinians from their land.
Situation in the West Bank
“We are very concerned about the worsening situation in the West Bank,” Dujarric said.
He firmly criticized “unbridled violent activities by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank.”
Dujarric also called on all parties not to “distract attention from other parts,” although Gaza remains the main focus.
Regarding the current situation in the West Bank, Dujarric conveyed a warning from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) regarding the worsening situation in Jenin and refugee camps in the region.
The Israeli military operation which has been going on for seven days since January 21 has caused casualties, as well as destroying roads and infrastructure.
He recalled the killing of a Palestinian toddler by Israel last weekend and added, “Since the operation in Jenin began on January 21, 16 deaths have been reported.”
“Additionally, in the Tulkarm refugee camp, airstrikes have reportedly killed two Palestinians, raising concerns over the use of force that exceeds law enforcement standards,” he added.
Dujarric also emphasized that “hospitals are not targets of attack and must be protected at all times,” highlighting the siege of Tulkarm Government Hospital by Israeli forces.
Tensions continue to rise across the occupied West Bank due to Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 47,300 people and injured 111,500 others since October 7, 2023.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 880 Palestinians were killed and more than 6,700 others injured as a result of attacks by Israeli forces in the occupied territories.
A ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal took effect in Gaza on January 19, halting Israel’s genocidal war in the territory.
In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel’s long-standing occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (AT Network)
