US Accuses China of Creating Instability in South China Sea

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The United States, on Sunday, December 10 2023, asked China to stop dangerous actions that disrupt stability in the South China Sea.

This started with a collision between a Philippine ship and a Chinese Coast Guard ship. The crash occurred during a Philippine supply mission to a small garrison at Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, a flashpoint between Manila and Beijing, coming a day after another incident near Scarborough Shoal.

The Chinese ships used water cannons and maneuvers that forced collisions.

“This caused damage to Philippine vessels conducting official supply missions to these locations and endangered the safety of Filipino crew members,” said US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller in a statement, reported by CNA, Monday, December 11, 2023.

Based on this accusation, China claims that its coast guard’s actions against Philippine ships in the disputed South China Sea were professional and controlled.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said the Chinese Coast Guard took necessary measures against the Philippine ships in accordance with domestic and international laws.

“The operation was professional, controlled, reasonable and legal,” he said. (ATN)
