VECONAC 2025 Conference: Indonesia Urges ASEAN to Strengthen the Role of Veterans

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia asserted its leadership in regional defense diplomacy as the Head of the National Reserve Agency of the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Gabriel Lema, represented the Indonesian Minister of Defense at the 2025 Veterans Confederation of ASEAN Countries (VECONAC).

The series of meetings, including the 37th Executive Board Meeting and the 24th General Assembly, took place at Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta, from 23–27 November 2025.

The annual gathering aims to strengthen cooperation among ASEAN veterans’ organizations and formulate concrete policies to enhance the welfare and roles of veterans across the region.

Delivering the Defense Minister’s remarks, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Lema emphasized that veterans are not merely historical figures, but a moral force and strategic asset in safeguarding national sovereignty.

“The welfare and dignity of veterans are essential components of a nation’s moral strength. Indonesia firmly believes that cooperation within VECONAC plays a strategic role in reinforcing each country’s defense efforts,” he stated.

Over five days, VECONAC 2025 discussed regional resolutions and collaborative initiatives, complemented by field visits to PT Pindad and the Asian-African Conference Museum in Bandung.

The conference underscored Indonesia’s commitment to advancing veteran-focused cooperation in ASEAN, driving stronger solidarity, and positioning veteran welfare as a strategic regional priority. (AT Network)
