AZEC 2nd Ministerial Meeting: Indonesia Emphasizes International Collaboration for NZE

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia officially welcomed the participants of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) 2nd Ministerial Meeting at the Gala Dinner which was held in Jakarta, Tuesday, August 20 2024.

AZEC is part of the emissions reduction initiative first initiated by the Japanese Prime Minister at COP 26 in Glasgow and officially launched at the G20 Summit in Bali, 14 November 2022, by President Joko Widodo and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Bahlil expressed his appreciation for the solid cooperation in the energy sector between AZEC member countries consisting of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei and Australia.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration to achieve the net zero emissions (NZE) target, especially for developing countries like Indonesia which need adequate technology and funding.

“Achieving net zero emissions is our common goal and this is our shared responsibility. In the future, Indonesia must reach a better point in 2050-2060,” said Bahlil.

Bahlil further emphasized that developing countries like Indonesia have great potential in new renewable energy, but still face challenges in terms of technology and financing.

“There must be synergy between developed countries that already have technology and developing countries that have potential but do not yet have good technology, especially if they require sufficient capital,” continued Bahlil.

The 2nd AZEC Ministerial Meeting will produce several important results, including The 2nd AZEC Ministerial Joint Statement, publication of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the new AZEC project and the launch of the Asian Zero Emission Center. Apart from that, the AZEC Business Forum will also be held which aims to encourage the participation of business entities in decarbonization efforts as well as as a business matching forum to strengthen collaboration in the future.

“I am confident and confident that through this forum tomorrow we will be able to discuss to give birth to constructive ideas for good and mutually beneficial collaboration and cooperation,” concluded Bahlil.

On the same occasion, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ken Saito expressed his appreciation to Indonesia for organizing this event.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Indonesian Government for hosting this meeting. The leadership, enthusiasm and energy shown by Indonesia to push forward this big plan is in line with Indonesia’s efforts to lead AZEC. Through this event, I hope “We can build momentum to accelerate decarbonization in Asia,” he added. (AT Network)
