ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, attended the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, September 26, 2025.
Marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Minister Sugiono underscored the urgent need for reform to ensure that multilateral institutions remain responsive, effective, and relevant to today’s global challenges.
He emphasized that the UN80 Initiative and the Pact for the Future should serve as critical momentum to strengthen multilateralism, while highlighting the vital role of BRICS in promoting a more inclusive, fair, and effective system of global governance.
On the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Minister Sugiono raised concerns over the slow progress, noting that only 15 percent of SDG targets are currently on track, with a financing gap of up to USD 4 trillion for developing countries.
“This General Assembly must deliver the political will and resources needed to accelerate SDG implementation,” he stressed.
He further underlined the importance of BRICS in supporting development financing while pushing for a more equitable global financial governance structure.
Addressing humanitarian issues, Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia’s deep concern over the continued illegal occupation of Palestine.
“The path to lasting peace lies in the realization of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with UN resolutions,” he declared.
He welcomed the consistent support of BRICS member states on the Palestinian cause and urged stronger collective action to ensure accountability and justice for the Palestinian people.
Concluding his remarks, Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to working closely with BRICS to help shape a fairer, more inclusive, and effective international order.
He also expressed Indonesia’s full support for Brazil’s current chairmanship and looked forward to closer cooperation with India as the next BRICS Chair. (AT Network)
