ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia and Singapore are deepening defence cooperation as part of a broader strategic partnership forged at the leaders’ level, with both countries seeking to strengthen regional stability amid rising geopolitical uncertainty across the Indo-Pacific.
The latest development follows the Indonesia–Singapore Leaders’ Retreat on July 6, where Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong oversaw the signing of 26 cooperation agreements covering strategic sectors, including defence, economic cooperation, energy, digital transformation, connectivity, sustainability, and investment.
The agreements marked a significant expansion of bilateral ties, with 18 government-to-government commitments and eight business-to-business partnerships aimed at deepening economic integration and creating new opportunities for collaboration between the two neighbouring economies.
Among the key outcomes was the Joint Update on Defence Cooperation, presented by the defence ministers of both countries, which reinforced commitments to strengthen bilateral security cooperation alongside broader economic and strategic initiatives.
Building on the leaders’ agreement, senior defence officials from Indonesia and Singapore convened the Third Indonesia–Singapore Defence Cooperation Committee (DCC) in Jakarta to advance practical cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA).
The meeting was co-chaired by Indonesia’s Defence Ministry Secretary General Lt. Gen. Tri Budi Utomo and Singapore’s Permanent Secretary (Defence) Joseph Leong, who reaffirmed the importance of translating political commitments into concrete defence initiatives.
Discussions focused on advancing key elements of the DCA, including the Implementing Arrangement for the Military Training Area (IA MTA) and operational procedures for joint training involving the Indonesian and Singaporean armies, navies, and air forces.
Beyond military exercises, both sides agreed to expand cooperation in strategic dialogue, professional military education, personnel exchanges, maritime security, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and collaboration through the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus frameworks.
The strengthened defence partnership comes as Southeast Asia faces a more complex security environment, marked by intensifying major-power competition, maritime challenges, cyber threats, and the need to maintain stability along vital global trade routes.
For Indonesia and Singapore, security cooperation is increasingly becoming a foundation for broader economic resilience. A stable and predictable regional environment is essential for protecting supply chains, supporting cross-border investment, and sustaining confidence among businesses operating across Southeast Asia.
The July summit also highlighted the economic dimension of the partnership, including cooperation on supply chain resilience, carbon markets, cross-border electricity trade, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, industrial estate development, renewable energy, and investment projects involving major Indonesian and Singaporean companies.
Among the strategic initiatives announced were collaborations involving Danantara, Keppel, Sembcorp, Telkom, and other business partners, reflecting efforts to strengthen industrial connectivity and accelerate investment cooperation between the two countries.
Indonesia and Singapore, which are approaching six decades of diplomatic relations, continue to position their partnership as a key pillar of ASEAN cooperation, combining security coordination with economic integration.
The Third Indonesia–Singapore Defence Cooperation Committee concluded with the signing of the official Minutes of Meeting, reaffirming both governments’ commitment to practical, adaptive, and mutually beneficial defence cooperation.
Both sides agreed to convene the Fourth Indonesia–Singapore Defence Cooperation Committee in Singapore in 2027, maintaining momentum in one of Southeast Asia’s most important bilateral security partnerships.
