ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Saudi Arabia’s national flag carrier, Saudia, and Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, are strengthening their aviation cooperation through a strategic partnership that aims to expand connectivity, improve passenger services, and create new opportunities across key international markets.

The two airlines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a broader business partnership, marking a significant step toward developing integrated air travel solutions between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

The cooperation is expected to enhance connectivity for passengers traveling between the two countries, including Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, while opening wider access to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

The agreement builds upon existing collaboration between Saudia and Garuda Indonesia through codeshare arrangements and their shared membership in the global SkyTeam airline alliance.

Expanding Seamless International Travel

Through the MoU, both airlines will explore the development of a seamless travel network through a single-ticket connectivity system, allowing passengers to combine flights operated by Saudia and Garuda Indonesia more efficiently.

The initiative will connect Garuda Indonesia’s extensive network in Indonesia and Australia with Saudia’s international routes serving major destinations across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

Beyond network expansion, the partnership will also examine opportunities in route planning, flight schedule coordination, commercial cooperation, marketing, and distribution strategies to better serve passengers in key markets.

Enhancing Hajj and Umrah Journey Experience

A major focus of the partnership is improving travel services for Indonesian pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah.

The collaboration will explore initiatives in customer loyalty programs, digital technology integration, airport services, and other solutions designed to provide a smoother and more convenient travel experience.

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest markets for Hajj and Umrah travel, making stronger aviation connectivity with Saudi Arabia strategically important for both nations.

The MoU signing was witnessed by Saudia Group Director General Ibrahim Al-Omar and Garuda Indonesia Vice President Director Thomas Sugiarto Oentoro.

The agreement was signed by Saudia Chief Commercial Officer Arved von zur Muehlen and Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills.

Strengthening Indonesia–Saudi Strategic Ties

Arved von zur Muehlen said the partnership reflects Saudia’s commitment to developing high-value collaborations that strengthen global air connectivity.

“This MoU builds on the strong cooperation between Saudia and Garuda Indonesia and reflects Saudia’s strategic focus on building valuable partnerships that strengthen air connectivity. Through this agreement, we aim to provide passengers with more flexible travel options between Indonesia, Australia, and Saudia’s network across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa,” he said.

Meanwhile, Neil Raymond Mills highlighted the broader strategic importance of the cooperation beyond aviation services.

“The collaboration between Garuda Indonesia and Saudia carries strategic value beyond network expansion. It strengthens Indonesia’s access to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa as some of the most important travel corridors for Indonesian communities, supporting religious journeys, business mobility, and broader economic cooperation,” he said.

Toward a More Integrated Aviation Future

As members of SkyTeam, Saudia and Garuda Indonesia will continue exploring deeper operational integration, including airport service coordination, technology development, and initiatives to enhance passenger experience.

The partnership represents a strategic step in strengthening the air connectivity bridge between Southeast Asia and the Middle East while supporting tourism, religious travel, and economic relations between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

With expanded cooperation between the two national carriers, passengers are expected to benefit from more convenient, efficient, and connected international travel experiences. (AT Network)
