15 CCS/CCUS Projects in Indonesia Ready to Onstream in 2030

Carbon Capture and Storage and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS) project in Indonesia. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia continues to be committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, one of which is from the energy sector, through developing renewable energy, implementing energy conservation, and implementing clean technology.

One of the efforts taken in implementing clean technology is the development and utilization of Carbon Capture and Storage and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS).

“Currently, Indonesia has a total of around 15 potential CCS/CCUS projects with an onstream target of 2026 – 2030. Two basins that are being encouraged by the Government to become CCS Hubs in the East Asia and Australia region are the Sunda Asri basin and the Bintuni basin,” explained the Director of Development Upstream Oil and Gas Business, Ariana Soemanto during the Oil and Gas Session at the Indonesia – Norway Bilateral Energy Consultation (INBEC) meeting at the Pullman Hotel Jakarta, Monday, July 1 2024.

Indonesia is known to have the largest sedimentary basin in the Southeast Asia region. Indonesia has potential carbon storage resources in 20 basins with a capacity of 573 Giga tons of Saline Aquifer and 4.8 Giga tons of depleted oil and gas reservoirs spread across various regions in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua.

Ariana explained that the CCS scheme in Indonesia is divided into two options.

The first option is to organize CCS based on the Oil and Gas Cooperation Contract. The CCS activity plan can be proposed by the Cooperation Contract Contractor in POD I or a follow-up or revised POD.

Second, CCS can be developed as a separate business, through an Injection Target Zone Exploration Permit and a Carbon Storage Operation Permit.

To support the development of CCS/CCUS, the Government has also implemented various policies, including establishing the CCS/CCUS National Center of Excellence together with research institutions and universities, strengthening international cooperation in the CCS/CCUS field, as well as formulating derivative regulations and policies.

“Currently, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 2 of 2023 and Presidential Regulation Number 14 of 2024 have been issued which provide a strong legal basis for the development and implementation of CCS in Indonesia,” concluded Ariana. (AT Network)
