ASIATODAY.ID, UGANDA – Indonesia fully gathers Palestine at the United Nations (UN).
This call was made by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Pahala Nugraha Mansury, when speaking at the 19th High Level Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which took place in Kampala, Uganda, on 19-20 January 2024.
In a national statement delivered on Saturday, January 20, Pahala, who led the Indonesian delegation, underlined the importance of the spirit of the Asian-African Conference in Bandung which emphasized the importance of the joint struggle of developing countries to realize independence, justice, equality and development.
“This spirit must always be the inspiration for NAM in facing various global challenges, especially in realizing the independence of the Palestinian people and safeguarding the interests of developing countries,” he stressed.
Therefore, Indonesia urges the NAM to unite, urges a ceasefire in Gaza, and encourages the peace process and seeks full Palestinian unity at the UN.
Currently, there are 5 NAM members who are Non-Permanent Members of the UN Security Council who are expected to help voice the NAM’s common position regarding Palestine.
Apart from the main meeting of the NAM Summit, Pahala Mansury also met with the Foreign Ministers of Palestine and South Africa regarding the Palestinian issue. Pahala Mansury emphasized Indonesia’s support for the struggle of the Palestinian people, to achieve a long-term solution and independence. Indonesia also supports South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Indonesia also encourages NAM to become part of the global solution and consistently prioritize the interests of developing countries, especially in realizing the right to development.
“We must guarantee the right of developing countries to carry out development in accordance with their national priorities, for example through downstream industry,” he explained.
Pahala emphasized that NAM is a very large political force.
“NAM members currently exist in 121 countries, with a population of around 55% of the world’s population. “With this much power, NAM must be able to change the world order to better reflect justice for all,” he concluded.
Apart from delivering Indonesia’s national statement, on the sidelines of the 19th NAM Summit in Kampala, Pahala also held bilateral meetings with a number of other countries, namely with the State Minister of Uganda, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, and Secretary General of UNCTAD.
Meanwhile, the 19th NAM Summit was held under the Chairmanship of Uganda with the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence”. The NAM Summit in Uganda was attended by 121 member countries as well as a number of observer countries and international organizations.
The meeting agreed on four documents, one of which was the NAM Political Declaration which encouraged the realization of peace in Palestine. (AT Network)
