ASIATODAY.ID, RIO DE JANEIRO – The 2025 BRICS Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, concluded with a set of strategic agreements enshrined in the Leaders’ Declaration.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the summit and reaffirmed Indonesia’s firm commitment to promoting trade, global peace, and a more equitable and inclusive global governance system.
According to Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, the declaration focuses on four key pillars:
1. Strengthening Multilateralism and Reforming Global Governance
BRICS leaders agreed to uphold multilateralism and push for reforms in global institutions, such as the United Nations, to ensure fairer representation for developing countries.
2. Global Peace and Economic Resilience
Indonesia emphasized the importance of this pillar for expanding market access for Indonesian products and boosting economic resilience amid global uncertainty.
“This second point is vital for Indonesia, especially in ensuring our products have access to BRICS markets,” Airlangga stated.
3. Sustainable Development and Equitable Energy Transition
BRICS countries agreed to promote inclusive and just green development, ensuring that the energy transition takes into account the unique challenges faced by developing nations.
“BRICS is committed to sustainable, fair, and inclusive development,” Airlangga added.
4. Partnerships for Human, Social, and Cultural Development
This pillar includes cross-cultural collaboration and capacity building to support inclusive social transformation across member states.
Prabowo Emphasizes BRICS’ Role in Advancing South-South Economic Cooperation
During the second session of the summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence,” President Prabowo highlighted the urgent need to revive multilateralism in a multipolar world. Indonesia advocated for stronger economic cooperation among developing nations and a greater role for the New Development Bank (NDB).
According to Minister Airlangga, President Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to actively participate in the NDB as part of its commitment to sustainable and green economic transformation.
“The NDB is currently managing over 120 projects valued at approximately USD 39 billion, including clean energy and sustainable infrastructure initiatives,” Airlangga explained.
Furthermore, Indonesia proposed a new initiative — the “South-South Economic Compact” — aimed at positioning BRICS as a driver of economic access and integration for the Global South. Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir (Tata) emphasized that this initiative would enhance trade access and improve supply chain integration across developing nations.
Prabowo Reaffirms Indonesia’s Commitment to Global Peace and Fair Governance Reform
In the BRICS 2025 plenary session, themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” President Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s strong stance in support of global peace through multilateralism and fair global governance.
“The President firmly rejected war and the application of double standards, aligning with the majority of BRICS leaders who called for a reformed multilateral order and stronger representation of the Global South,” Airlangga said.
President Prabowo also underscored the relevance of the Bandung Spirit, a historical legacy of Indonesia’s leadership in the Global South, as a moral compass in championing the rights of developing nations and advocating for Palestinian independence.
“The President emphasized that the Bandung Spirit should continue to guide BRICS in addressing global inequality,” he added.
Deputy Minister Tata noted that BRICS leaders widely acknowledged the growing instability in the international landscape and the need for the Global South to assert greater leadership in reforming the multilateral system.
“There was a shared sentiment among BRICS leaders that the bloc must play a key role in reforming and strengthening multilateral institutions,” Tata explained.
Indonesia’s active participation in the 2025 BRICS Summit reflects its readiness to contribute to a more balanced and inclusive global architecture. Through its unwavering commitment to open trade, green development, and global governance reform, Indonesia is positioning itself as a strategic partner in advancing the interests of the Global South and shaping a new world order.
