ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Ericsson Mobility’s latest report states that 5G network subscribers in the Southeast Asia and Oceania region will reach around 550 million people in 2029.

Head of Ericsson Indonesia Krishna Patil said service providers in the region are not only building initial infrastructure to make this happen.

“In addition to creating the initial stages of 5G infrastructure in this region, the focus of service providers is to develop a variety of service offerings for consumers and companies,” said Patil in a press release, Thursday, December 7 2023.

Cellular network data traffic per smartphone in Southeast Asia and Oceania is estimated to reach 66GB/month by 2029. Currently, cellular data traffic per smartphone in Southeast Asia and Oceania is 24GB/month with compound annual growth (CAGR) of 19% .

Globally, Ericsson estimates that almost 1 in 5 global cellular customers will use 5G by the end of 2023. In total, the estimated 5G users this year will reach 1.6 billion people. This number is around 38% or 610 million more than the previous year. On an annual basis, the estimated growth of global 5G users will reach 63% in 2023.
Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson Fredrik Jejdling, said that the increasing use of standalone 5G networks could open up opportunities for new applications to be used by both consumers and companies.

5G standalone (SA) is a new cellular network architecture that does not rely on existing 4G infrastructure to facilitate communications. This means that this technology stands alone. Meanwhile non-standalone, moves on top of existing infrastructure.

“We see that the increasing use of standalone 5G networks can open up opportunities to support new, more challenging applications for consumers and enterprises,” said Jejdling.

By 2029, he continued, world 5G subscribers are expected to increase by more than 330% from 1.6 billion to 5.3 billion people.

“Referring to these figures, 5G can reach more than 45% of the global population by the end of 2023 and 85% by the end of 2029,” he said. (AT Network)
